McDonald’s sold gift certificates
Perhaps you weren’t born when this happened, but McDonald’s used to sell gift certificates during the year. If you didn’t know what to gift a friend for their birthday, you could simply give them a gift certificate and watch them enjoy a Happy Meal.
Back then, gift certificates looked decent. They weren’t just cards you had to punch in while checking out. The ones from McDonald’s were colorful and came with different joyful designs. Every kid loved receiving a gift certificate, even if they wouldn’t spend it right away.
