Dumpster diving
Technically, it’s illegal to use the garbage can of another person or place of business since most people in the United States pay for the city to pick up their trash. Therefore, someone using your garbage can is considered theft. In any case, it’s hard to think that people would want to mess with dumpsters.
@Sarah_Hennessy1 still had to take out the trash at night, whether or not her imagination ran wild or not. Certainly she knew that the likelihood of someone hiding in the dumpster was quite low. But we can imagine her trying to use the trash can’s cover to shield herself from the attacker.
