A lettuce craving pointed to a fatal deficiency
Food cravings are mostly subjective and should not generally be taken as signs that you are lacking in nutrients. However, some deficiencies can manifest themselves through an unexplainable need to eat a particular food, as in this case.
This person’s obsession with lettuce turned out to be connected to an extreme iron deficiency, and by extreme, we mean just that. They were not going to get better by taking some supplements; they had to be given several blood transfusions.
