Chronic intermittent appendicitis was mistaken for simple gas
The most common sign of appendicitis is acute pain in the lower quadrant that worsens with time. Intermittent appendicitis is a much rarer form, where the pain comes and goes. Obviously, the second type can be hard to diagnose.
It is no wonder doctors missed it in this case. They are trained to go for the apparent explanations first, so a rare form of the sickness would have escaped their notice. If you have similar unexplained problems, mention this to your physician.
