The ER staff thought he was faking the pain to get drugs
Emergency room staff usually have to be on their guard at all times. They have probably seen people do all kinds of things for drugs, so it is no surprise they are wary. However, there is a difference between being wary and dismissive.
After all, this man did not deserve the pain he was put through because of their prejudice. It is odd that the initial bloodwork did not show any hint of his arthritis. Then again, they probably did not put much effort into investigating the source of his discomfort.
