This article shows us a good-old debating trick
Debates are generally reserved for the most civilized and intellectual people. Having a discussion is a way to argue with an opponent without getting into a larger conflict. The primary weapons are supposed to be your strong points and your ability to turn around the opinion of the other side.
This old debating trick is something we had never seen before in an ordinary debate. This drawing is from the civil confrontations between 1854 and 1859 in what used to be the Kansas territory. In 1856, Senator Charles Sumner was attacked by Congressman Preston Brooks in the Senate with a cane.
