The Elizabethan collar is for dogs, humans just get a ruff
Names are something weird when you really think about them. Most of the time, they have no actual meaning. Their only function is to help us identify different objects, people, and places without much trouble. However, we can make mistakes as a society when we decide on a name for something new.
This Depth of Wikipedia post gives us some interesting food for thought. It makes no sense that we call the piece of clothing that Queen Elizabeth I wore around her neck “ruff,” but the ones for dogs are Elizabethan collars. “Ruff” sounds like a word that should be dog-related, right?
