A friendly inquiry? Or a malicious warning?
Some events traumatize you enough for a lifetime to even consider doing the same thing again; in this case, it happens to be camping in the wild alone. We can’t blame him, considering that there wasn’t anyone else (at least no civilian) in that area except him; hearing a cold phrase like this one is just anyone to make them pee their pants.
That person could be just a native pulling playing a prank on him, or he could be some dangerous lunatic. Since there wasn’t any car besides this camper’s, whoever it was might still be out there!
