Masters of Sex-Missouri: Who said there’s nothing sexy about the midwest?
The show “Masters of Sex” is based on the medical work and lives of real-life sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson. The show is set in the 1950s through the ’60s, and the two main characters research human sexuality at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. However, the series was filmed in Los Angeles and New York.
The show has many real-life locations filmed on Long Island, New York. The pilot’s opening party scene and the ballroom took place at the Hempstead House in Sands Point, formerly the Industrialist Guggenheim mansion. This was a stand-in for Washington University. Once the show was approved for more episodes, it moved production to Los Angeles.
