The location has been a go-to option for many major western-style stories. The storyline revolved around the city and its laws and lifestyle. The characters portray real-life inhabitants of the town and other historical figures like Civil War Army officer George Crook and folk hero of the old west Wild Bill Hickok. The show used actual diaries and newspapers from 1870s Deadwood residents to accurately portray their stories and look of the settings.
