The doctor who laughed at his own awkward jokes
If you are a doctor, lightening the mood with a joke can be an excellent strategy for your patient to open up and answer your questions honestly. However, certain jokes may be more uncomfortable than funny. Laughing awkwardly at your own witty remarks is not much of a solution: it may make the situation even weirder.
Calling a pap smear a “pappy” test is bound to earn him some eye rolls. No one wants to listen to not-so-clever quips while at the gynecologist. It is usually a more “get it done and get out” type of visit. That said, we cannot fault the poor doctor for his attempt at making things lighter. Maybe he was nervous and needed a dumb joke like this one to center himself.
