Times have certainly changed, and movie plots too. In today’s princess movies, you won’t find a main character whose entire purpose in life is to find the love of their life and get married or wait until a strong man rescues them.
However, that was precisely the type of protagonist little girls were looking up to in the past. For example, Ariel from The Little Mermaid fell in love with Prince Eric, a man she didn’t even know, and left absolutely everything behind to be with him.
