Gravity in cartoons only works when the character looks down
The normal laws of physics rarely apply to cartoon shows and movies, especially gravity. It’s a rule of thumb that any character suspended in space will remain in midair until they realize their situation. Then, they’ll fall fast and hit the ground in a second or two.
The Looney Tunes episodes with Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner are packed with gags related to gravity. As the Coyote ran after his prey, he would fall from a high cliff—but gravity wouldn’t kick in until he looked down.
