The partner of the deceased was not considered family
Thankfully, nowadays we live in a society where most people can spend their lives with the person they love regardless of gender. Every type of love should be accepted and respected as such, even when one of these people passes away.
Choosing to spend your days with the person you love should be enough to be considered family. Who cares about a piece of paper? Love cannot be measured by those types of things, especially in a time of grief.
