The question was legitimate, but the tone was wrong
In the early days of text messaging, before smartphones and touch screens, shortening words was actually a necessity. It meant that you would save about five clicks of a button and make your texting experience much smoother.
The original poster did not really understand why they were still in use today so they made up an ironic post. Too bad they forgot that Reddit is the place you go to get a crash course on how to master comebacks.
