Waking up During a 15 hour Elbow Replacement
Regardless of age, you can undergo different types of surgeries for long hours. Some of these surgeries will be uncomfortable, which would lead to the individuals having pain afterward. An elbow replacement can be a long and painful surgery. In this incident, a 14-year-old who was having an elbow replacement surgery woke up choking on the airway tube of their throat. When they woke up in a panic, everyone in the OR said it was ok that they were finished with the procedure.
This Reddit user reported that the surgeon informed them they woke up mid-way through the surgery while in recovery; they had to tell them the surgery was finished so they wouldn’t freak out anymore. The surgery lasted 15 hours because the surgeons needed to get another part, which had to be flown in. While waiting, the doctors and nurses hovered over the patient while heavily sedating the patient. The 14-year-old admitted to not feeling physically uncomfortable compared to the panic induced by waking up.
