The instructions given by the anesthesiologist are meant to help you be as calm as possible during the preparation and actual surgery. 

This is the case of a patient who came in for a lumpectomy procedure, and the surgeon did not listen to the anesthesiologist’s instructions about general. But when the procedure starts, this patient wakes up and tries to speak while lifting her head, freaking out. They administer the general. The anesthesiologist was worried and paced around the recovery room for 2 hours until the patient woke up.
