He was mature enough to allow her to go despite truly loving her. He proposed, but it didn’t work as planned. It was a big blow to him because he never saw it coming despite being besotted with her. Her smartness, as he claimed, made her see that there was no future together, and also, she was too young to start a relationship at that moment.
