She loved her pet as much as her daughter
When children move out of their childhood homes, it can be hard for parents to fill the void they leave behind. Getting a pet is a good strategy since it will give them a sense of affection and support, as well as something to take care of. In some cases, the pet can even become like a second child.
That was evidently the case for this family. The mother explicitly referred to the dog as a second daughter, and we have no doubt she loves her like one. In our opinion, there is nothing wrong with that, but it seemed to make her real daughter a bit jealous.
