The muscle can cause a rattlesnake to rattle up 50-100x per second without stopping when activated. Every time the rattlesnake molts, it grows another section of its rattle. This means that the longer the rattle on a rattlesnake, the longer it’s been alive. But be careful, some rattles do break off over time; counting the rattles on a rattlesnake is not an accurate method of telling the snake’s age.
