Sometimes you know what you want to get tattooed on yourself, but you can’t decide on the style you want it. The how is almost as important as the what. The how is the language people will interact with what you wanted to say.
Here, the client could have chosen a more geographically realistic style and shown the mountains and oceans. But in such a restrictive space, it may have been hard to get all the details. A series of vertical lines will do just fine.
