90’s Halloween Movies to Marathon This Spooky Season

Do you ever just wish you could go back to a crisp October day in the ’90s? The Scholastic Book Fair, classroom Halloween parties, and of course, a *chef’s kiss* lineup of Halloween movies. While, unfortunately, we can’t actually time travel, we CAN bake those sugar cookies with pumpkins on them and have our own *chef’s kiss* Halloween movie line up; and while we now have adult concerns and responsibilities, we can have wine with movie nights now, and that’s pretty cool. Here’s a list of our favorite 90’s Halloween movies you HAVE to add to your queue. (https://annalee.com)

Hocus Pocus

Does it get any more classic 90’s Halloween movie than Hocus Pocus? In case you’re one of the few that have yet to watch Hocus Pocus, the film follows some angsty teens that resurrect the Sanderson Sister trio, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, and chaos and hilarity ensue the town of Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween night. Catchy songs, Madonna costumes, and an animatronic cat – what’s not to love?

Halloweentown

Before we get into the magic of the film Halloweentown, let’s be the first to say, we will never NOT want to spend Halloween in the actual Halloweentown, err, town. Halloweentown was all over Disney Channel back in the day and frankly, old habits die hard, there is just something about Halloweentown that made audiences fall in love with it, and to this day, you can still find it on a number of streaming services. To make a long (and quite thrilling, we might add) story short, Halloweentown is the story of how generations of witches save a whole town by way of a giant Jack-O-Lantern that sits on the town square. And good news if you love Halloweentown: there are three more installments to follow.

Casper

Casper, a friendly ghost as the song goes, lives quite happily haunting a mansion in Maine; until one day, a paranormal specialist by the name of James Harvey and his daughter Kat move in. Casper quickly falls in love with Kat, but as one can imagine, it’s pretty difficult to date a ghost, especially a ghost with uncles that love causing trouble. This movie was a hit back in the day and is still a hit in our hearts. To be honest, we’re still waiting to be invited to a Halloween party that’s even half as cool as the one in Casper. And don’t even get us started on the whole “can I keep you?” moment.

Double, Double Toil and Trouble

Okay, we know what you’re thinking: A young Mary-Kate and Ashley movie? Really? Yes, really. There is just something incredibly comforting about watching a movie, especially a Halloween movie, from way back in our childhood. Double, Double, Toil and Trouble is a spooky little film about headstrong twins that attempt to trick their evil aunt out of a magic moonstone to save their family home. Something about this movie makes us want to crack the windows open, let a chill in, and light some cinnamon-scented candles.

The Blair Witch Project

Okay, we fully understand this movie was simply that: a movie, but to this day, it still haunts us. The Blair Witch Project is significantly scarier than the first few movies we discussed, so this one is not for the faint of heart. Or stomach. The Blair Witch Project is “found footage” of three film students that interviewed locals about a local murderer known as the Blair Witch, as well as “footage” of them searching the woods for her themselves. In all honestly, we consider this a cult horror classic, so gather up your best pals, keep them close, and press play.
