The name Gru is from a Russian Military Intelligence agency (GRU)
The name of the main character, Gru, was derived from a Russian Military Intelligence agency (GRU), which stands for “Glavnoye Razzvedyvatel’noye Upravleniye.” This service agency is the largest in the whole of Russia and is six times larger than the country’s foreign intelligence service, SVR.
To intensify the villainous of the main character in Despicable Me, the animator decided to coin Gru’s name from the acronym of one of Russia’s largest intelligence services. We don’t think there is a better name than Gru. It is the perfect name for a villain who is planning to steal the moon.
