Oompa Loompa characters may have inspired the Minions
The creation of the Minions was believed to have been inspired by the Oompa Loompas that appear in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as by the Jawas in Star Wars. These earlier characters perform slightly similar functions; they are also small, childish, work in pairs, and are headed by a leader.
The director explained that he created Minions because they were very easy to draw and can be universally recognized. What’s more, he also said that Minions are so universal that audiences everywhere can understand their story, emotions, and thoughts. It seems these little creatures are easily recognized and appreciated on a global level.
