Be sure your roommate actually pays the rent
It’s hard to trust that people know how to deal with money responsibly. The same goes for roommates as well. It can get awkward when the rent is due and your roommate was supposed to give the full amount to the landlord but does not. This can be especially infuriating if the roommate had your share of the rent but spent it on something else.
It is surprising how some people don’t hesitate to steal from others, even those they’ve been living with. Talk about a breach of trust. Therefore, it is always preferable to pay the rent directly to the landlord and never through any roommmates. People need to earn trust, not be given it blindly.
